Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has said that he hasn't been offered a new contract to stay beyond the 2024-25 season. As things stand, the Dutchman will be out of contract following the upcoming campaign.
Van Dijk is Liverpool's record signing, moving from Southampton in January 2018 for a reported £75 million. The Reds endured a lot of criticism over the transfer, but the 33-year-old has repaid their faith.
He has racked up 23 goals and 12 assists in 270 appearances for the Merseysiders across competitions. He also took the armband in 2023 after Jordan Henderson had left for Ajax.
Despite having such a deep-rooted connection with the club and their fans, there seems to be no progress in contract talks. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano (via Independent), the Dutchman said.
"There is no changes (in contract talks) at the moment."
Despite being linked with a plethora of players over the past few months, Liverpool are yet to sign one in the summer transfer window. However, Van Dijk is confident that the club is close to completing a few transfers:
"I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go but they are working behind the scenes, and I am fully convinced and trust the club that they will do the right thing for us. That is the main thing I am focusing on, having the trust, and we will see what happens."
Van Dijk's statements indicate the possibility of contract talks resuming after the Reds complete their squad revamp as Arne Slot's first season in charge gets underway.
"He should stay" - Fabrizio Romano on Virgil van Dijk's contract situation at Liverpool
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on superstar defender Virgil van Dijk's contract situation at Liverpool.
After the Netherlands' heart-breaking semi-final exit at EURO 2024, Van Dijk had said that he had "no idea" about what the future would hold for him. He said that he would "think carefully this summer" about the right move for him as he "recovered" from the defeat.
However, he doesn't seem to have made his mind up thus far. In his Daily Briefing on CaughtOffside, Romano wrote:
"There is no news at all on Virgil van Dijk, despite some stories at various points this summer. It’s currently very quiet as Liverpool are counting on Van Dijk and there are no significant updates so far."
However, Romano is confident that the Dutchman is likely to continue with the Premier League juggernauts:
"In my opinion, he should stay and continue as he’s a key player for Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot will need him and the quality and experience he brings."
Van Dijk's Netherlands lost 2-1 to England in the Euro 2024 semi-final.
