Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski shared his thoughts after their 2-1 defeat against Atletico Madrid in LaLiga on Saturday. The defeat at the Olimpic Lluis Companys Stadium was the Blaugrana's second in a row, having lost 1-0 against Leganes in their previous match.
Pedri gave Barcelona the lead in the 30th minute on Saturday as they looked to bounce back from a tough run of form. Rodrigo De Paul then equalised in the 60th minute. Just when it seemed like the match was heading towards a draw, Alexander Sorloth scored the winner for Atletico Madrid in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
After the game, Lewandowski rued Barcelona's missed chances and highlighted that they have lacked decisiveness in key moments in recent weeks.
“I think there are several factors," Lewandowski said (via Barca Universal). "Plus we made mistakes that Atletico exploited on the counterattack. I remember that we can play good football. We had chances, but we didn’t take them.
“I think in the last three weeks, maybe we lacked confidence and calm in the box in those decisive moments."
Barcelona had 63% possession and attempted 19 shots with seven being on target. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, had five attempts with four being on target.
Robert Lewandowski reflects on Barcelona's poor form and what they can learn from it
Barcelona now have three wins in their last nine games across competitions with four defeats and two draws. They have just one win in seven LaLiga games with four defeats and two draws. The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres have been guilty of missing big chances in recent weeks.
After the defeat against Atletico Madrid, Lewandowski highlighted their learnings from this run, saying (via Barca Universal):
“I think this round was a lesson for us. Sometimes, if you can’t win, you should at least not lose the game. It happened to us several times in this round. I think in the new year we will come back stronger and play better football.”
He added:
“Sometimes you have to know, when you want to win but you can’t, you definitely shouldn’t lose the game. Of course, you can be satisfied, you can play good football, you can look good on the pitch, but what we lacked today was the final touch, and that’s what affected us not winning this game."
The Blaugrana have now slipped to second in LaLiga table as they sit three points behind Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand. Real Madrid are third, one point behind Barca but with two games in hand over them.
