Arsenal legend Ian Wright has passionately urged fellow players to revolt against racism following an unsettling incident involving Vinicius Jr.
Vinicius Jr, a youthful force at only 22 years of age, was at the end of racially-charged taunts during Madrid's narrow 1-0 defeat against Valencia on Sunday, May 28. Afterward, the torrent of solidarity from officials, players, and retired football stars alike, in both Brazil and Spain, was overwhelming.
Notably, while Ian Wright also offered his resounding support to the young talent, he advocated for an unprecedented approach. Speaking on his podcast, Wright called for players to walk out during matches marred by racist incidents.
Writing on Twitter, with the video from his podcast attached, he stated:
"There are no more slogans left. No more campaigns. No more conversations to be had. We were told and taught to turn the other cheek. Enough. We have to affect the money. That's all they care about."
The former Arsenal maestro made it clear that this bold strategy was designed to hit the industry where it hurts - its finances. Wright believes that such a move would force the league and broadcasters to confront the ugly reality of racism head-on.
Valencia release club statement regarding Vinicius Jr incident
In a crucial development following the disquieting racism incident involving Vinicius Jr, Valencia have issued a definitive statement. They announced the identification of three spectators implicated in the racially-driven actions, courtesy of police intervention.
The club reaffirmed its strict stance, stating that they will issue lifetime bans to fans found guilty of such egregious behavior. Valencia also underscored the point that the offensive conduct was not indicative of the entire fan base.
Part of the statement read (via GOAL):
"Valencia CF confirms that in the last few hours the police have identified a total of three fans who made racist gestures at Vinicius Jr in the game last weekend against Real Madrid. Valencia CF is cooperating with the authorities in their investigation to eliminate racism at Camp de Mestalla."
Vinicius Jr has not shied away from expressing his discontent with the Spanish league's response to the rampant racist abuse he's had to endure. The La Liga president, Javier Tebas, in turn, has suggested that the player should acquaint himself better with the anti-racism initiatives undertaken by the league.
Carlo Ancelotti, the Real Madrid manager, joined the chorus demanding more substantial measures to halt such incidents. Speaking about the attacks against his player, Ancelotti noted that the situation called for action far beyond what was currently being done.
