Former Argentina goalkeeper Hugo Gatti has opined that Florentino Perez was the reason Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. did not win the 2024 Ballon d'Or. During a recent interview, the La Albiceleste great suggested that jealousy and envy for the Los Blancos president were the reasons why the trophy went to Manchester City's Rodri.
He said (via Argentine outlet La Nacion):
Question: Was it good that they gave Rodri the Ballon d’Or?
Gatti: Yes. But they didn't give it to Vinicius because they were jealous of Florentino. If he wins everything…
The decision to award Rodri the coveted trophy this year sparked extensive and heated debate. Heading into the event, Vinicius was believed to be the frontrunner for the Ballon d'Or but an apparent last-minute change saw the Spaniard take it home.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a productive season for Real Madrid, as they won both LaLiga and the Champions League. He finished the campaign with 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 games.
Rodri, meanwhile, had success at club and international level. Manchester City won their fourth straight Premier League title and the midfielder was a key part of the side. He carried his form into the Euros, helping Spain lift the trophy and winning the 'Player of the Tournament' award. He scored nine goals and gave 14 assists in his 50 games for City last year.
Vinicius Jr. aims sly dig at Ballon d'Or after winning FIFA's The Best Men's player award
Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, seemed to take a shot at the Ballon d'Or results after lifting the 2024 FIFA's The Best award. In an Instagram post, the 24-year-old opened up on overcoming his struggles, writing:
"Today I write to the child who has seen so many idols lift that trophy. His time has come. Or rather, my time has come. The time to say ... yes, I am the best player in the world and I have fought hard for it."
"They have tried and tried to invalidate me, to diminish me. But they are not ready. No one is going to tell me who I should fight for, how I should behave," he added.
The Ballon d'Or ceremony, held in October of this year, caused controversy. Real Madrid's contingent refused to attend the event as it emerged that Rodri would pip Vinicius to the award.
FIFA's The Best voting included contributions from national team coaches and captains, expert media members, and fans. The winger finished first with 48 points, with Rodri finishing second (43) and fellow Los Blancos midfielder Jude Bellingham coming third (37).
