“[They] don’t want to do the ugly side of the game” - Paul Scholes names 4 Manchester United stars who won’t fit Ruben Amorim’s system

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui won't be a good fit under Ruben Amorim. The Sporting manager will take charge of the Red Devils on November 11 as Erik ten Hag's replacement.

There are already doubts about whether the current backline can fit into the Portuguese manager's three-man defensive shape. However, Scholes thinks that Amorim will also have his work cut out while addressing Manchester United's attack.

Speaking to TNT Sports before the PAOK game, the Englishman outlined why the four players could struggle under Amorim.

"There are three or four players, especially forward players, who don’t want to do the ugly side of the game. He’s going to have to make them do that. We talk about the back three, we have six centre-halves they can choose from. He has got the two central midfielders in Casemiro and [Manuel] Ugarte. It’s the wingbacks that could be the problem," said Scholes.

He continued:

"Does he want wingers who are going to run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure Rashford and Garnacho are right for that. Does he want two wing-backs in Dalot and Mazraoui who might be a little bit better defensively but not as good going forward?"

However, Scholes backed Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo to shine under Amorim.

"He has then got his two no. 10s. Fernandes is one of them and I actually think Mainoo could be one of them too. I think he’ll be a better player higher up, it will suit it more," said Scholes.

Manchester United have three wins and four defeats from 10 games in the Premier League this season, and are 13th in the table right now.

When was the last time Manchester United won the Premier League?

Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United last won the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2012/13 campaign. The Red Devils finished the season with 28 wins, and just five defeats.

They scored 86 goals in the league, conceding 43, and finished with 89 points, 11 ahead of second-placed Manchester City. Unfortunately, it has been a downhill ride for the English giants since.

Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012/13 campaign and none of the successive Manchester United managers have managed to crack the league since. Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are the only ones to come close, finishing second behind Manchester City in the 2017/18 and 2020/21 campaigns respectively.
