Football pundit Ally McCoist has hailed Manchester United for how they dealt with Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold in their 2-2 draw in the Premier League this Sunday (January 5).
The Red Devils traveled to Merseyside to face Arne Slot's side in a difficult fixture at Anfield. Amorim's men were going through a poor run of form before facing Liverpool, losing their last three league fixtures before the New Year.
Meanwhile, the Merseysiders had quite the opposite end to 2024, winning their last three fixtures dominantly and scoring 14 goals in the process. While many expected triumph for Liverpool, they were held to a point at home.
Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah got on the scoresheet for the Reds while Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo scored for United. Trent Alexander-Arnold had a poor game defensively, losing all five of his ground duels (via FotMob).
Ally McCoist heaped praise on Ruben Amorim for exploiting Alexander-Arnold's shortcomings to secure a point at Anfield. He said on talkSPORT:
"I know it's only one game but I thought it was a very, very good performance from United. But in terms of Trent'd defensive play yesterday, A, I thought it was really, really poor, but B, I'm maybe not just as surprised as some people are.
"I don't think he's great defensively, I think, as I said earlier, his main attribute is going forward and with the ball at his feet and passing. So, fair play to Ruben Amorim and United for exploiting that and they did it exceptionally well."
Liverpool take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday (January 8) while Manchester United will face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday (January 12).
"It’s like schoolboy stuff" - Roy Keane slams Liverpool star's defending in Manchester United draw
Roy Keane lambasted Trent Alexander-Arnold for his defending against Manchester United. The pundit insists that the Englishman has to improve that aspect of his game.
Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. However, Keane slammed the right-back, whose sloppy pass led to Lisandro Martinez's opener, claiming that he could only join League Two side Tranmere Rovers.
The Manchester United legend said (via The Independent):
“We talk about how brilliant Trent is going forward, but Trent’s defending today, my goodness, it’s like schoolboy stuff. There’s talk about him going to Real Madrid – the way he’s defending he’s going to Tranmere Rovers after this. He’s got to do better defensively, he has to do better.”
Alexander-Arnold has made 24 appearances across competitions for the Merseysiders this season, contributing a goal and five assists.
