Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has warned the Reds against taking Chelsea lightly. He also praised the Blues' performance under new manager Enzo Maresca and believes the side are gradually improving.
In Liverpool's matchday program ahead of the Chelsea clash, Van Dijk stated he was impressed with how the Blues had played so far in the ongoing season. He said:
"I know that Anfield will be bouncing for the visit of Chelsea, and for sure we will look to draw on that noise and atmosphere as we go for all three points. We all have our part to play in what will be a very tough game. I have been impressed by Chelsea's progress this season. I said a few weeks ago, after our win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, that they have gone under the radar a little bit within the media, but we will certainly not be underestimating them.
"A lot has been made about the number of changes they have made as a club during the past couple of seasons, but one thing that is absolutely certain is that they have a squad which is full of very good footballers, players who can cause problems for any team. They also have a manager who has a clear idea of how he wants his team to play, and who looks like he is starting to get the best out of the talent at his disposal."
Liverpool are currently on top of the Premier League table and can extend their lead at the top with a win over Chelsea. The Blues, meanwhile, are sixth right now and can jump to third – a place above Arsenal – with a win at Anfield.
Liverpool manager looking forward to Chelsea challenge
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is looking forward to their game against Chelsea. He believes a poor league performance last term does not mean that the Blues can be taken lightly.
He said (via Liverpool's official website):
"If you look at the league table, it is. I think Manchester United is a very good team, a top club in England that has spent a lot of money to even make the team better again. Same for Chelsea in this season. Chelsea does really well.
"If you look at the league table then they are the ones that might be our toughest opponent. But it's not always about the league table. Sometimes it's about the form of the day, it's about their game plan. We had some difficulty with Wolves as well, who are bottom of the league, I think. But it is a challenge, that's for sure."
The Reds beat Chelsea twice last season – once in the Premier League and then in the Carabao Cup final.
