Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has issued his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur's upcoming Premier League clash against Brentford. The match is scheduled to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, May 20.
The pundit was confident of Spurs continuing their recent good form at home, predicting a 2-0 win for the North London side.
"I think Tottenham might win this," Mark Lawrenson said to Paddy Power News. "They seem to be doing okay at home lately and they beat Crystal Palace the other day so I’ll go for another home win. Tottenham 2-0 Brentford."
Tottenham have had an inconsistent season. Spurs now lie in seventh position in the Premier League table, hoping for other results to go their way for any hope of European football.
They had a difficult run of form that saw former manager Antonio Conte heavily criticize the players in the media before the Italian left the club by mutual consent. His successor and interim manager Cristian Stellini was also dismissed following an embarrassing defeat to Newcastle United. Currently, former player Ryan Mason is in charge of the side for the remainder of the season.
Brentford have had a good season and will look to finish strong to secure a top-half finish. Led by Ivan Toney, the Bees have exceeded expectations this season. They are currently ninth in the table.
Tottenham looking to sign star player from rivals Chelsea
Tottenham have shown interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. According to the Sun, the Blues are interested in offloading quite a few players this summer and Mendy could be one of the players shown the door.
Longtime Spurs veteran and club captain Hugo Lloris has had a tough season and is expected to leave the side a year before his contract expires. The Frenchman has been a mainstay in the north London side for over a decade, racking up 447 appearances.
Mendy joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 after poor performances from record-signing Kepa Arrizabalaga. The 31-year-old immediately broke into the starting lineup and played a starring role in the Blues' unlikely Champions League victory.
However, he has since lost his place in the side to Kepa and has made only nine starts in the Premier League this season. His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025 but negotiations to extend his stay have not been productive.
While Spurs may be considering better long-term options than Mendy, who is 31, the Frenchman is a proven quantity and could be a great short-term fix.
