Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has insisted Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez will be unavailable for his team's Premier League contest at Nottingham Forest this Tuesday (January 14).
Gomez, 27, has been out of action for the Reds since picking up a hamstring issue in his side's 5-0 Premier League win at West Ham United on December 29. He has missed the Merseyside outfit's last three overall outings.
Nunez, on the other hand, will serve his one-match suspension in the Reds' upcoming league clash at City Ground. The 25-year-old picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
At a pre-match press conference, Slot was asked to provide an update on Gomez and if the centre-back is fit enough to feature against Nottingham Forest. He responded (h/t Liverpool Echo):
"[He's] quite far [from recovering], definitely not training with the team yet. Darwin is suspended. They are the two we will miss."
Asked if he is lucky to have most of his players fit now, Slot responded:
"That's in this moment. Things can be totally different but it is definitely helpful for any manager to have all their players available. We almost have that at the moment. Teams in England play a lot of games so it helps if they are available. Some teams have bigger squads than us, some teams don't. The teams in competition with us would have loved to have all their players available."
Liverpool are currently atop the 2024-25 Premier League table with 46 points from 19 outings. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, are in third spot with 40 points from 20 matches, level on points with title challengers Arsenal.
Arne Slot lauds 28-year-old Liverpool forward
At a pre-game press conference, Arne Slot was asked to share his honest thoughts on Diogo Jota potentially starting his side's next match at Nottingham Forest. He replied (h/t Liverpool Echo):
"He's someone I like to have in my squad. You saw us build him up. Now, he's ready to play 90. It's nice to have him available, hopefully it stays like this. He's a hard-worker, tries to become a better player every single day. He's a player who is good in both parts. He's a threat when attacking and he works really hard."
Since returning from his rib injury suffered last October, Jota has made eight appearances in all competitions for the Reds. He has started his team's last two games and has scored three goals in his last eight total matches.
Overall, the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers star has contributed seven goals and two assists in 18 overall appearances for Liverpool this term.
