Fans are in disbelief on social media after Chelsea superstar Cole Palmer ranked 25th in the 2024 Ballon d'Or rankings. The 22-year-old talent has been a shining light at Stamford Bridge since his move from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.
Unable to find sufficient playing time with the Mancunian giants, he opted for an exit, with the Blues paying a reported £40 million to sign him. He quickly became their most important player, completing last season under Mauricio Pochettino with 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 Premier League appearances.
His remarkable burst into the limelight and his impressive performances saw Palmer get a call-up to the England national team. He also scored in the Euro 2024 finals as they lost 2-1 against Spain. He has continued brilliantly this season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in just nine Premier League games under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Fans were expecting the Ballon d'Or rankings to recognize Cole Palmer as one of the best players in the world, so they were shocked that he ended up 25th. They took to social media platform X to share their annoyance about his position with posts like these:
"That is criminally low." a fan complained.
"25th is so LOW FOR PALMER PLEASE. HE SHOULD BE IN TOP 10," another fan claimed.
"This is disgustingly disgraceful" a third was displeased.
"WHAT???? you’ve got to be joking. this has to be a joke," another was in disbelief.
"Do these journalists even watch football???? This guy deserved top 15 at least," a fan was angry.
"Another disgusting ranking, maybe get journalists that watch football?" another argued.
"He could have been higher, anyway the ceiling is high for this lad. Chelsea have landed a gem and something to build around the team and become challengers," a fan remained hopeful.
Cole Palmer's comments on Ballon d'Or nomination
Cole Palmer has made comments about his nomination for the 2024 Ballon d'Or awards. Speaking to Telegraph Sport a week ago (October 20), he revealed his hopes of winning the Ballon d'Or eventually. He shared his delight about being recognized as a 22-year-old, saying:
"It was a surprise to be recognised at that level so early in my career. It’s a huge honour. Winning it would be brilliant, and I believe with hard work and consistency I could get there!"
Although he was unable to lead Chelsea to any major trophies, fans certainly believe that Cole Palmer deserved a higher spot in the rankings. However, he will hope he can improve the Blues' performances this season and potentially set himself up for a higher ranking in next season's award ceremony.
