Fans have reacted to goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's performance in Chelsea's 2-0 home loss to Manchester City in their Premier League opener on Sunday (August 18).
Erling Haaland broke the deadlock inside 18 minutes at Stamford Bridge - capitalising on a Bernardo Silva assist. Former Blues man Mateo Kovacic confirmed the three points for the four-time defending champions six minutes from time.
Playing his 100th game for City since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, Haaland registered his 91st strike. However, the 26-year-old Sanchez's performance left much to be desired, and fans let it known on social media.
One fan said:
"They need to publicly lash whoever said Robert Sanchez is good with his feet. This guy is atrocious."
Another chimed in:
"Robert Sanchez should never play for Chelsea again. Utterly useless goalkeeper"
One more fan said:
"How many f**king times did this club need to see Robert Sanchez be absolutely diabolical to realise he was absolutely diabolical. It actually boils my blood. He's terrible. He's a calamity. GET HIM OUT"
There were similar sentiments from other fans, with Rob saying:
"That should be the end of Robert Sanchez's spell as No. 1"
CFCDaily commented:
"No manager who starts Robert Sanchez in 2024 gets sympathy from me."
CFC-Blues said:
"Robert Sanchez is nowhere near good enough to play for this football club."
The Blues had also lost to City in pre-season.
"A perfect start" - Manchester City striker Erling Haaland after beating Chelsea
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is happy to score his first Premier League goal of the season as the Cityzens opened their quest for an unprecedented fifth straight title with a win over Chelsea.
Pep Guardiola's side have been the standout team in the top flight in the last seven years, winning six titles, including the last four. Following the convincing win over the Blues, Haaland told Sky Sports (via BBC):
"Three points, a perfect start. First games are always hard, for everyone. It doesn't matter if you had a pre-season or not. I had a long pre-season, but I don't feel perfect, I'm not in the perfect state. It's good to get that win.
City next take on newly promoted Ipswich Town at home on August 24, while Chelsea take on Servette at home in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League playoff.
