Manchester United fans slammed midfielder Manuel Ugarte after the Red Devils' dismal 3-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur (September 29). While the team failed to ignite as a whole, the Uruguayan endured a dreadful outing in the middle of the park.
Ugarte moved to United from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer for a reported €50 million fee. He has slotted into the side as young star Kobbie Mainoo's partner in manager Erik ten Hag's double-pivot system.
The 23-year-old was making his first Premier League start for the Red Devils in the game against Tottenham. However, the occasion quickly turned from memorable to appalling, as he constantly misplaced passes and gave up possession. He picked up a yellow card for shoving Dejan Kulusevski in the 65th minute and was substituted for Christian Eriksen in the 73rd minute.
At full-time, fans were disappointed with Ugarte's display and took to social media to vent their frustration.

"Ugarte is one of the worst players I’ve ever seen at United. He runs in straight lines like a dog chasing a ball. In the position he plays and the fee that’s been spunked on him he should be putting out fires and controlling the game," @ewancorky wrote.
"Ugarte is fighting for his life out there. This game is moving at 120hz and the guy can only move at 40hz," @Gbemiga__A wrote.
"Ugarte doesn't have a clue as to where he needs to be omg," @Ic3Evaa wrote.
"Ugarte makes no sense to me. A 6 who can't progress the ball from back to front or stop transitions is crazy," @RashBandicootIV commented.
"They looked like the home team" - Former Manchester United star claims that Spurs looked at home in 3-0 win at Old Trafford
Everton full-back Ashley Young lambasted Manchester United after their sub-standard performance in a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur (September 29).
Young plied his trade with the Red Devils between 2011 and 2020, racking up 19 goals and 35 assists in 261 games for the club across all competitions. Currently with the Toffees, he seems to have kept up with his former side and was utterly disappointed with the result.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Young said (via Inside Futbol):
"Manchester United didn't give anything. There was no effort, no workrate, no leaders on the pitch. It was disjointed, there were individuals all over the pitch. Everything was bad from start to finish. They didn't lay a glove on Tottenham. Spurs had so many chances they looked like the home team. The United fans will be disappointed and rightly so."
Manchester United will be looking to put this result behind them as they prepare to face Porto in their second game of the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League on October 3.
