Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed that his side will be without up to 10 first-team players when they face Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final. Spurs have been plagued by injuries in recent weeks and have seen their performances drop off drastically, with two wins in 10 Premier League games.
Postecoglou faced the press ahead of his side facing league leaders Liverpool in the last four of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (January 8). The Australian tactician was asked if the club intends to enter the transfer market again this month. He revealed that he has an injury list that contains around 10 first-team regulars, necessitating the club to look to recruit new faces this month. He said (via Sky Sports on X):
"We'd still, I think, try to help the squad and help the players obviously. Like I said, we're still down significant numbers, again we'll have roughly 10 first-team players missing tomorrow and that isn't easy at the moment, you know. Obviously we're getting one back, we lose a couple so we still need to look to try and see if we can help the playing group, and the club's working hard with that, with a number of areas."
Tottenham Hotspur have signed goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Czech outfit Slavia Prague following an injury crisis at the back, which forced Postecoglou to field Brandon Austin in goal against Newcastle United last Saturday. The Premier League side have been linked with a number of players this month as they look to strengthen their squad. They are without the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Fraser Forster, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert, Mikey Moore, and a handful of others.
Spurs lost to Liverpool in a goal-fest in the Premier League in December, with the Premier League leaders claiming a 6-3 win. Postecoglou will hope his threadbare squad can pull off an upset and move him a step closer to a first title as Spurs boss.
Tottenham captain extends stay at club
Tottenham Hotspur have decided to extend the contract of captain Heung-min Son by a year amid interest from clubs abroad. The English side have triggered the option to extend the contract of the South Korea international until 2026, preventing him from leaving on a free transfer.
Son was handed the armband at Tottenham at the start of the 2023-24 season following the exit of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. The 32-year-old forward has been at the club since 2015, having been signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £22 million.
Heung-Min Son has appeared 431 times for Tottenham Hotspur and is 11th in the club's all-time appearance list. He has also scored 169 goals for the club, with only Kane, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith, and Martin Chivers scoring more. This season, he has registered five goals and six assists in 17 league appearances for Spurs.
