Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has opened up about the moments before Thomas Tuchel was sacked from Stamford Bridge. The Gabon international joined the Blues towards the end of the German tactician's tenure in west London.
Tuchel arrived in January 2021 and remained in charge for 100 matches across competitions. His final game as manager of Chelsea was during their 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in a Champions League group-stage clash in September 2022.
The Blues then decided to sack the 51-year-old coach, who had delivered the Champions League trophy the season before. Speaking about Tuchel's behaviour in his final days at the club, Aubameyang told David Ornstein (via @AbsoluteChelsea):
"We lost [to Dinamo Zagreb] and he was p***ed off. Usually, he would go crazy but he came to the dressing room and then left. I was like, ‘This is not the guy I know. Very strange’. The next day, he was sacked."
After Tuchel's departure, Chelsea had a horrific conclusion to that campaign, finishing 12th in the Premier League. Meanwhile, the German decided to join Bayern Munich about six months after his previous job.
He remained with the Bundesliga team till the end of the 2023/24 campaign and has now been handed the responsibility of coaching England. Tuchel won the Bundesliga title once at the Allianz Arena in the 2022/23 season but did not win the trophy the following year.
England star was unaware of former Chelsea manager's presence in stands during Wolves v Nottingham Forest
Current England boss Thomas Tuchel was present for Nottingham Forest's 3-0 win over Wolves on Monday (January 06). A player he may have kept an eye on is Morgan Gibbs-White, the man who netted this game's opener.
However, the 24-year-old attacker said he was unaware of the German's presence in the stands. When asked about Tuchel watching the game post-match, Gibbs-White said (via Sky Sports):
"I didn't even know he was here. I'm just focusing on club football at the minute. I think that's all I can do. We've been doing well and we've got to maintain that and we'll see what happens when March comes."
To date, the Nottingham Forest star has appeared just twice for his country and has yet to bag his first goal. It remains to be seen whether Gibbs-White is part of Tuchel's plans when The Three Lions begin their World Cup qualification campaign against Albania in March.
