Patrice Evra jokingly told fans to wait for VAR when responding to Manchester United's announcement that they have sacked Erik ten Hag. The Premier League giants posted on Instagram a confirmation of the Dutchman's dismissal.
The Red Devils' legendary former left-back responded in the comments of that post. He wrote:
"Lets wait for the VAR guys..."
VAR was ultimately Ten Hag's last setback, leading to his Manchester United sacking. A controversial VAR decision in a 2-1 loss to West Ham United handed his team their fourth defeat in nine league games.
The defeat left the Red Devils sitting 14th in the Premier League table. They are also 21st in the UEFA Europa League standings and haven't won a game in Europe for a year.
Evra initially suggested he wasn't concerned for Ten Hag when speculation over his future ensued earlier this month. He said he expected him to get through a tough period because he always seems to win when his job is at risk.
That wasn't the case at the London Stadium and the Reds are now searching for a successor. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in temporary charge of Manchester United as caretaker manager.
Ten Hag oversaw 72 wins in 128 games at Old Trafford, ending the Premier League heavyweights' six-year trophy drought. INEOS will seek a long-term permanent replacement, with ex-Barcelona boss Xavi and Brentford's Thomas Frank in the frame.
Ex-Manchester United star Raphael Varane liked Ten Hag-sacking post
Many of Manchester United's past and present players have reacted to Ten Hag's dismissal, including Raphael Varane. The Frenchman, who left Old Trafford in the summer, liked the Red Devils' post on Instagram.
Varane, 31, spent two seasons under Ten Hag and helped the Reds win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. He'd intended to stay longer with the 13-time Premier League champions but was let go when his contract expired.
The former Real Madrid star sustained a knee injury 23 minutes into his competitive debut for Serie A side Como. He decided to call time on his career amid injuries piling up.
Varane appeared to have a good relationship with Ten Hag but was occasionally dropped by the Dutchman. He was a fan favorite at Old Trafford, and many felt he deserved to stay when the Red Devils decided not to give him an extension.
