Ex-Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton has urged Liverpool-linked star Anthony Gordon to not seal a move away from Newcastle United.

Gordon, 23, has emerged as a transfer target for Arne Slot's outfit following his fine performances last season. He scored 12 goals and laid out 11 assists in 48 games across competitions for his club last term.

During a recent interview with British betting outlet Best Online Poker Sites, Sutton shared his thoughts on Gordon attracting attention from Liverpool this summer. He said (h/t Mirror):

"I heard these Anthony Gordon rumors a few months ago and was left scratching my head a little bit. I don't know how Newcastle fans would feel about selling the player. The way Gordon was at Everton, I wasn't the only person who questioned whether he had the right temperament. But in fairness to him, he's gone to Newcastle to work under Eddie Howe and he's knuckled down."

Sutton, who lifted the Premier League title in 1995, concluded:

"Last season, he was brilliant and performed well. He produced his best form. If I was him, I wouldn't be in a rush to leave Newcastle. The fans there really took to him... he felt the love from the Geordies. He seemed to have a really good relationship with the manager too, which is key. The Liverpool move is attractive and will come one day. But staying at Newcastle is the sensible option."

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in a potential £45 million deal in 2023, has a deal until June 2026 at the St. James' Park outfit.

Paul Scholes suggests Liverpool need new faces in 2 positions ahead of 2024-25 term

Manchester United great Paul Scholes has stated that the Reds should rope in two players soon. He told The Overlap (h/t Rousing The Kop):

"I think Liverpool are alright. The manager is a bit different from Jurgen Klopp but they were up there for quite a bit of last season and they just fell away the last few games. I'd say a holding midfielder away from being a really good team and possibly a centre-back."

Liverpool, who lifted the EFL Cup earlier this February, finished third in the Premier League table with 82 points from 38 outings last season.

So far this summer, the Merseyside outfit are yet to sign a new player.

However, Arne Slot's team could announce their first summer signing soon as they are allegedly in talks to sign midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
