Al-Hilal fans filled the stadium with Lionel Messi chants as they defeated Cristiano Ronaldo-led Al-Nassr 4-1 in the Saudi Super Cup final on August 17. Clips of fans chanting Messi's name in front of the Portuguese icons went viral on social media. Watch here:
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal for Al-Nassr in the 44th minute as he capitalized on an assist from Abdulrahman Ghareeb. However, Al-Hilal dominated the game in the second half by scoring four goals in 17 minutes, winning their first trophy in the 2024-25 season.
It is not the first time Al-Hilal fans have chanted Ronaldo's arch-rival Lionel Messi's name from the stands when they've faced his side. Viewers have been spotted with Messi's banners and posters to mock Ronaldo during Al-Hilal's clashes against Al-Nassr since the Portuguese talisman joined the club in 2022.
Meanwhile, Messi hasn't been on the pitch for his current club Inter Miami since picking up an ankle injury in the 2024 Copa America final. The Argentine picked up his fourth consecutive international trophy this year after leading La Albiceleste to their second Copa America trophy.
Neymar recorded fans chanting Lionel Messi's name when Al-Hilal faced Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in Kings Cup final
Al-Hilal fans have been spotted carrying Lionel Messi's posters and chanting his name during their clashes against Saudi Pro League rivals Al-Nassr.
During Al-Hilal's win over Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. in the Kings Cup final in May 2024, fans were once again chanting Messi's name during the match. Shortly after the match, clips of Al-Hilal star Neymar filming fans chanting the Argentine's name while laughing about it with his friends went viral online.
After a 1-1 draw, Cristiano Ronaldo's side lost 5-4 on penalties, leading to another disappointment for the Portuguese icon in Saudi Arabia. He was one of the four players who converted his penalty from the spot. However, two crucial saves from goalkeeper Bounou's side gave Al-Hilal the advantage.
Earlier last season, Ronaldo was also unable to win the Saudi Pro League after finishing second in the table, 14 points behind Al-Hilal.
The Saudi Pro giants had reportedly offered Ronaldo's rival Lionel Messi a contract worth €1.5 billion to be paid over three years in the summer of 2023. The Argentine would be paid a whopping €500 million per season, as per Marca. However, Lionel Messi preferred to join MLS side Inter Miami as a free agent from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2023 over moving to Saudi Arabia.
