Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was spotted jumping into the stands and fighting Colombia fans following Uruguay's Copa America 2024 elimination on Wednesday, July 10. Uruguay suffered a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the semi-final, with the only goal of the match coming from Jefferson Lerma in the 39th minute.

According to several reports, the Reds attacker and others stepped in to protect their families. The issue is currently being investigated by the tournament's governing body, CONMEBOL.

Opening up about the incident, Uruguay captain Jose Gimenez said (via ESPN):

"Please be careful, our families are in the stands, there are little new born babies. It was a disaster; there was no police and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink."

The aforementioned footballing organization said about the incident after the match (via ESPN):

"CONMEBOL strongly condemns any act of violence that affects football. Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values."

Uruguay will now participate in a third-place match against Canada on Saturday (July 13). Meanwhile, Lionel Messi's Argentina and Colombia will meet in the competition's final on Sunday (July 14).

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa did not explain in detail about the events concerning Darwin Nunez and Co. after his country's Copa America semi-final defeat to Colombia. The former Leeds United manager was seemingly unaware of exactly what happened until he spoke with his players.

However, he later revealed that he came to know of certain issues that had taken place after the full-time whistle. Speaking at a post-match press conference, Bielsa said (via ESPN):

"I thought the incident ended with some argument on the midfield when I saw that happening I went to the locker room."
"I thought they were thanking the fans for their support. But then I learned that there were some problems over there unfortunately."

Nunez has made five appearances for his country in Copa America 2024, bagging two goals. It remains to be seen whether he will face repercussions for his actions from Wednesday night.
