Former Real Madrid full-back Marcelo has left Fluminense

Real Madrid legend Marcelo had a public spat with Fluminense manager Mano Menezes during a recent game, which cost him dearly. The Brazilian Serie A club have since announced that the player's contract has been terminated with immediate effect.

The incident occurred during Friday's 2-2 draw against Gremio at the Macarana. With Fluminense leading the game 2-1, Menezes opted to bring on the Brazilian left-back for the final minutes of the game.

The manager was seen passing some tactical instructions to the former Real Madrid star. However, the player appeared to reject them, which infuriated Menezes, who decided against bringing the 36-year-old on.

Fluminense ultimately conceded an equalizer in the ninth minute of injury time to draw the game. It is unclear what had happened but Menezes shed some light on the matter in the post-match conference.

"I was going to put Marcelo in at that moment, but I heard something I didn’t like, so I changed my mind," said Menezes.

Fluminense weren't too pleased about the incident either. On Saturday, the Brazilian club announced that they had parted ways with Marcelo.

The Brazilian rose through the ranks at Fluminense, before moving to Real Madrid in 2007. He left Los Blancos in 2022 to join Olympiacos, before returning to his alma mater in 2023.

Marcelo spent 15 full seasons with Real Madrid, scoring 38 goals and setting up 103 more from 546 appearances across competitions. He won the LaLiga six times and also has five Champions League trophies to his name.

He picked up 25 trophies in total with the Spanish champions and remains one of their finest ever players. Many would argue that Los Blancos are yet to properly replace the Brazilian.

While Ferland Mendy has done a commendable job so far under Carlo Ancelotti, the player's lack of attacking adventure has been an issue. Last season, the Frenchman registered just one goal from 37 games.

This year, Mendy is yet to register a goalscoring contribution from 13 games. The player's contract expires at the end of this season, although Ancelotti has already confirmed that he has signed a new deal.

However, recent reports have also suggested that Real Madrid have identified Alphonso Davies as a possible upgrade on Mendy. The Canadian speedster has entered the final year of his deal with Bayern Munich and Los Blancos are apparently plotting to sign him on a Bosman move next summer.
