Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was questioned about whether the Red Devils need bigger players in set-piece situations. They haven't been the most comfortable in dealing with corners this season, having conceded goals on nine occasions from such situations in the Premier League.
Part of the problem may be the fact that one of the club's central defenders is Lisandro Marinez, who stands at a height of 5'9. Addressing this, Amorim told reporters (via GOAL):
"You can see that every corner nowadays is an opportunity. Sometimes, you forget the small guys and the talented guys and you put 11 guys on corners or to free-kicks. If you can do everything inside the box."
"But that is the rules and we cannot cry about it. We have to do the same thing and we have to focus on doing the same thing to the opponent. So that is my goal at the moment."
On whether the club needed to add bigger players, Amorim added:
"No. What I am saying is if set-pieces is becoming so important, you can do everything. We have to learn it and we have to do the same thing even with the small guy."
"We just have to copy and do the same thing without trying to change the rules. We have to use the rules to score also the [same] goals at set-pieces."
Manchester United needs to find solutions to these issues soon, with the side placed 14th in the Premier League table at the moment.
Ruben Amorim says Manchester United defender could be handed captaincy for Newcastle United clash
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire could seemingly take over the captaincy for the Red Devils' clash against Newcastle United on Monday (December 30).
Usual skipper Bruno Fernandes is suspended for this tie after he was sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. Speaking to reporters, Amorim said (via GOAL):
"You will have to wait and see about the captain. He's working really well. He's focused on the job, not what people say. He has no excuses - even if he's had some tough moments. In that respect, he's an example. He's there to play to help the team and he's trying to do that."
Maguire has started his team's last three matches in the Premier League and is likely to do so on Monday. He'll be expected to play in the middle of a back three for Manchester United.
