Saudi Pro League CEO Omar Mugharbel has made a bold claim on the transfer of Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. The Brazilian icon, who came in second place in the 2024 Ballon d'Or rankings, has long been admired in the Middle East, following the move of superstars into the region.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the first major European superstar to join the Saudi Pro League in recent years. His mega-money move helped the country clinch several more signings, as players like Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema followed suit. However, the Middle Eastern kingdom is dreaming big, and there have been rumors about a potential move for Vinicius Jr.
According to reports (via GOAL), the Saudi Pro League is working on a €1 billion package to sign the Brazilian winger from Real Madrid. Omar Mugharbel, the league's CEO, has now shared his belief that the winger could continue his career in Saudi Arabia in the future.
In a conversation with Spanish outlet Marca, he responded to a comment about their interest in Vinicius, saying (via GOAL):
“We don't have dreams, it's a matter of time and negotiation. Foreign players have always been part of Saudi teams. In recent years, the number of possible foreign players in teams has changed. This season we have included the number of eight plus two others under 21 years of age."
"It has always been in the DNA of this league to bring in players from outside to make it more attractive. What has changed massively, especially in the last two years, has been the quality of the players who come. Benzema, among others, create a bigger impact, both nationally and internationally," Mugharbel added.
The Saudi Pro League has signed quite a few superstars, with players like Sadio Mane, Fabinho, Yannick Carrasco, Aymeric Laporte, and others joining in recent years.
