Hungary international goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has claimed that everyone is equal in their team despite Dominik Szoboszlai being the biggest name. The Liverpool midfielder produced one assist in Hungary's opening game against Switzerland but his team ended up on the losing side.
Hungary find themselves under a lot of pressure following their 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in their opening game in Euro 2024. They will take on hosts Germany in the next game and could be set for an early exit if they lose.
Szoboszlai was not at his usual best against Switzerland but managed to set up Barnabas Varga for their only goal of the game. However, the 23-year-old was subject to scrutiny for his body language and inability to create too many chances.
Peter Gulacsi, who is highly experienced at the highest level, has insisted that they have an 'exceptional' player in Szoboszlai. However, he claimed that there is a structure in Marco Rossi's dressing room and everyone is considered equal.
Gulasci said, as quoted by Express Sport:
"We have a clear structure of how we want to play. And an incredible team spirit. Everyone knows where they stand and what their job is. Of course, we have an exceptional player in Dominik Szoboszlai, but we don't have a superstar. Everyone is equal. We are all pulling in the same direction."
Gulasci also heaped praise on Szoboszlai for his dedication towards his country and insisted that he always gives his everything. The RB Leipzig keeper added:
"He is our key player, as a character on the pitch and as a captain. To have such leadership at such a young age is extraordinary. You can feel what it means to play for our country. He could easily come to us from Liverpool and play at half speed but he gives everything he has. He wants to be on the pitch for 90 minutes every game. We have no limits when it comes to physical performance."
Szoboszlai has already earned 43 caps for Hungary at just 23 and has registered 12 goals and six assists. He became the youngest player to captain any country at the European Championship.
Andros Townsend slams Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai for his antics in Euro 2024 clash
Premier League winger Andros Townsend has blasted Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai for his antics in Euro 2024. Hungary faced a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Switzerland in their Euro 2024 opener and Townsend insisted that Szoboszlai should have been more positive.
The Luton Town winger claimed that the Liverpool star looked visibly frustrated and that does not suit him being the captain. Townsend said, as quoted by HITC:
"No, when you have got a player like Szoboszlai, he is your talisman, he is your captain, he is your leader, he is your best player. You need his energy. You feed off his energy. You need him to be positive. You can’t have him throwing his arms up, walking around the pitch with a face on him.”
The Liverpool midfielder completed the full 90 minutes as Hungary and provided the assist for Hungary's solitary goal. He joined the Reds last summer in a £60 million deal from RB Leipzig and endured an up-and-down season.
Despite enjoying a stellar start to life at Anfield, he faded as the season progressed ending up with seven goals and four assists in 45 outings across competitions.
