Chelsea's Cole Palmer has insisted that his team are aware that they will drop points this season. The Blues suffered a shock 2-1 league defeat at the hands of Fulham on Thursday, December 26, at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer gave Enzo Maresca's team the lead in the 16th minute of the game. However, the home side equalized through Harry Wilson in the 82nd minute.
Rodrigo Muniz then scored the winner in the fifth minute of second-half injury time to secure all three points for the Cottagers. It was Chelsea's first defeat since their 2-0 loss at the hands of Newcastle United in October end.
Speaking after the game, Palmer stressed that the Blues are still learning under Maresca.
"We knew we weren't going to win every game. It is the manager's first season with us. We are learning. Everyone said from the start we aren't title contenders. We are just getting better as a team and growing,” Palmer said (via @CFCPys).
Chelsea remain second in the Premier League table after 18 games this season. However, Liverpool, who are leading the title race and have a four point lead, now have two games in hand.
The Blues have lost just thrice in the league this season, winning 10 others so far. They have scored 38 goals and conceded 21.
How many goals has Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea this season?
Cole Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City last season and has been their most important player since. Palmer struggled for opportunities with the Cityzens, but found a new lease of life at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the team's struggles last season, Palmer stood out with his performances. He registered 27 goals and 15 assists from 48 games across competitions under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Even though the Blues replaced the Argentinean tactician with Enzo Maresca this summer, the Englishman has held his own. The 22-year-old has scored 12 goals and set up six more from 20 games across competitions this season.
The London giants remain in the Premier League title race at the moment and have also been quite impressive in Europe. Chelsea are leading the UEFA Conference League after six games, and have a 100% record in the tournament.
However, the Blues were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the quarterfinal stage by Newcastle United at the end of October. Maresca's team are now preparing to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Monday, December 30.
