Hansi Flick on naming Wojciech Szczęsny in Barcelona's starting XI against Real Madrid in Supercopa final
Hansi Flick shared his thoughts on naming Wojciech Szczęsny in Barcelona's starting line-up against Real Madrid in the final of Supercopa de España. After announcing his retirement in August 2024, the Polish goalkeeper returned to football and signed for Barcelona in October on a contract until the end of the ongoing season.
Initially, Szczęsny was brought in to replace first-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who sustained a patellar tendon rupture and is sidelined for the season. However, later Flick decided that the 34-year-old would serve as a backup to Iñaki Peña.
Wojciech Szczęsny made his debut for Barcelona in their 4-0 victory over UD Barbastro in Copa del Rey on January 4. He impressed everyone with his stellar performance against Athletic Club in the Supercopa semi-final on January 8, making five saves, including one from inside the box, and two high claims.
Hansi Flick spoke about his decision to include Szczęsny in Barcelona's Supercopa final ahead of the clash and said (via @JijantesFC on X):
"After watching the game against Bilbao we decided to go with the same starting eleven for today's match against Madrid. Whether Tek is in goal is a decision for today. It is nothing definitive."
Wojciech Szczęsny has contributed to two clean sheets in his first two appearances for the Catalan club.
