Andre Onana has given a glowing review of Manchester United's new signing, Leny Yoro, and promised his teammates will support the French teenage defender. The 18-year-old center-back made his non-competitive debut in the Red Devils' 2-0 win against Scottish giants Rangers today (July 20).
Yoro played the first half in Edinburgh and gave fans a glimpse of what to expect from him. He made one clearance, one tackle, and two recoveries, including an incredible block to keep the Rangers at bay.
Onana talked up Yoro's abilities and insisted he has the tools to succeed at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian shot-stopper said (via Sky Sports):
"Yeah that's why he's here at the end of the day (his talent). If you have the opportunity to be at Manchester United that means you have a lot of quality. He already showed in the first half that he's a great guy, young player, really talented player and good on the ball. We will enjoy him this season."
Onana was asked whether the price United paid for Yoro could put too much pressure on the France U23 international:
"We are here to help him so it doesn't matter what is going on. We're going to take the responsibility, he's a young player, we're going to give him time."
Manchester United eased to victory against Rangers at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. Amad Diallo gave Erik Ten Hag's side the lead with a fine finish (39'), while Joe Hugill came on at half-time and added a second goal (70').
Leny Yoro became the Red Devils' second summer signing earlier this week, arriving from LOSC Lille in a reported £52 million deal. He was one of Europe's most coveted teenagers and United beat the likes of Real Madrid to his signature.
Danny Simpson was wowed by Leny Yoro in Manchester United's win against Rangers
Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson watched Leny Yoro in action against Rangers as a pundit for MUTV. He lavished praise on the highly-rated teenager:
"He looks like a baby Rolls Royce."
Yoro's stock grew in Ligue 1 at Lille and he was vital for his former club last season. He appeared 44 times across competitions, helping Les Douges keep 20 clean sheets while chipping in with three goals.
The Saint-Maurice-born center-back's display today suggests Manchester United may have found a long-term replacement for Raphael Varane. The Frenchman has been dubbed a Rolls Royce throughout his illustrious career. He left Old Trafford earlier this month after his contract expired.
