Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has sympathised with his compatriot Erik ten Hag after the latter was fired by Manchester United on Monday.

Ahead of Liverpool's EFL Cup last-16 tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, Slot was asked to share his honest thoughts on Ten Hag's recent dismissal. He replied (h/t Liverpool Echo):

"He is a Dutch manager so that makes it even harder for us as Dutch people. We are all in this job so we know it can happen, and if it happens, especially as I know him a little bit and how much work he puts into it, to get this news for him is a pity. But we also know how well he did at Ajax and won two trophies over here, we will see him in the near future at a big club again."

After surviving a potential sack at the end of past season due to a FA Cup win, Ten Hag signed a contract extension at Manchester United earlier this summer. But, he failed to get United off to a great start this term, guiding them to just four wins in 14 games in all competitions.

Manchester United, who have appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new interim boss, are currently on the lookout for a new manager. They have reportedly been in touch with Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United legend names favourites to win title after Liverpool's latest draw at Arsenal

Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool registered a 2-2 Premier League stalemate at Arsenal following their eight-match winning run. Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino netted one goal apiece for the Gunners, while Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah scored one goal each for the Reds.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Manchester United great Gary Neville said that Manchester City are the favourites to lift a fifth straight league title this season. He said (h/t Metro):

"City will drop points as well at some point in the season and they'll have difficult weekends but this was a good one for them. It's the result they would have wanted. City, at this moment in time, are clear favourites. They're ahead in the league where they would want to be but there is a long way to go. I think this season has got something left in it and Pep [Guardiola] and City will think that as well."

City are currently atop the standings with 23 points from nine league matches. The Reds are second with 22 points and Arsenal are in third place with 18. Manchester United are 14th with just 11 points right now.
