West Ham United have provided an update about striker Michail Antonio after he underwent surgery "on a lower limb fracture" following his recent car crash. The 34-year-old was involved in a road accident on Saturday (December 7), with the club informing the public that he was "conscious and communicating."
They have now provided another update on the forward, stating (via Standard):
“West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days."
West Ham's statement added:
“Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.”
According to the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Michail Antonio was trapped in his car after the accident. Their statement read (via Standard):
“Crews were called at 1.02pm this afternoon after reports of a road traffic collision involving one car. Firefighters reported that a man was trapped in his car and worked to release him by 1.45pm. The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.”
Antonio has been a West Ham player since 2015, playing 323 games, scoring 83 goals and providing 41 assists for the Hammers.
Jamaica head coach sends wishes to Michail Antonio
Michail Antonio has received well wishes from Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren. The 34-year-old only broke into the national team of the Caribbean country three years ago and has since scored five goals in 21 caps.
Steve McClaren said (via Sky Sports):
"On behalf of the entire group of players, support staff and technical staff, I would like to wish Michail a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time."
A host of clubs from the Premier League and abroad have also shared their wishes for Antonio.
West Ham will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next Premier League match on December 9 at the London Stadium.
