Jason Cundy has urged Christopher Nkunku to leave Chelsea. The former Blues star believes that the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester United target does not fit into the Enzo Maresca system.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy stated that Nkunku has to be playing as a No. 10 but cannot do that at Stamford Bridge because of Cole Palmer. He believes that the Frenchman cannot operate as a forward or on the left wing, where Maresca has tried to play him.
He said via Metro:
"What is Nkunku? What is his best position? Who is this player? He’s a ten for me, he can play out on the left and be a body for 15 to 20 minutes at the end of games. But he isn’t a number nine and he and (Nicolas) Jackon are two totally different strikers and so Chelsea have two totally different attacks and two totally different set-ups with the wide men and Palmer. I feel for Nkunku because he’s caught between two positions. He’s not a number nine and he can’t play ten so where is his best role?"
"The whole role of number nine has been left down to Jackson this season and Nkunku doesn’t do that job when he’s given the chance. I think he will probably have to think about his future at the club because there is no role for him in this system and Maresca has no place for him. He’s using him because he feels like he has to," he added.
Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023 after an impressive spell with the Bundesliga side. However, he got injured in pre-season and missed most of the 2023-24 season and has now become a backup to Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea.
Jason Cundy wants Chelsea youngster to start ahead of Christopher Nkunku
Jason Cundy went on to talk about Chelsea and added that Marc Cghuiu should be getting minutes this season. He believes that the Spaniard has a lot to offer and should be the backup to Nicolas Jackson.
He said in the aforementioned interview:
"Whatever you think of Guiu’s age, we’ve seen a lot of him in the Conference League and there’s something in him. He works hard, he’s quick and he gets his goals. The reason he now comes on instead of Nkunku is because he’s a better fit for that Jackson role – Nkunku is not that player I’m afraid."
PSG and Manchester United have shown interest in signing Nkunku this month. Both clubs are yet to make a move to take the Frenchman away from Stamford Bridge.
