Jamie Carragher was shocked the Gary Neville's inclusion of Josko Gvardiol in his Premier League team of the season so far. The two pundits made their preferred XI known during Monday Night Football on Sky Sports on December 30.
They were asked to pick their individual best XI of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign shortly after Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Both men had seven of the same players in their preferred XI, which had the same set of players in midfield and attack. They also named Liverpool's captain, Virgil van Dijk, in defense.
However, things got a bit heated up when Neville named City defender Gvardiol in his team of the season thus far. The former Manchester United star's selection prompted Carragher to ask his colleague:
“What games have you watched? Are you serious? Are you serious?!”
In a swift response, Neville said that he had difficulties in naming a left-back. He explained that picked Gvardiol because the Croatian international has scored four goals for Manchester City in the Premier League this season.
"Yeah, I’m serious,” Neville replied. “To be honest with you, left back I was struggling with badly. It was the position that I was most struggling with. He’s scored four goals, he’s always a threat, he’s been the one who has consistently played, and he’s still the left back I would pick – at this moment in time – in the league.
“If I was picking a team right now, and I was thinking about building a back four, he’d be the player I’d put in at left back.”
Carragher responded:
“We’re picking on the first half of the season, and he’s given goals away, so why have you picked him?”
Neville replied:
“Because I think he’s the best left back in the league,
Manchester City have conceded 26 goals in 19 Premier League games this season, with Gvardiol being at fault for a couple of them as well.
A look at both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville's Premier League team of the season so far
Carragher's XI comprised players from Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as he named an almost familiar team to his colleague Neville.
Carragher had Mohamed Salah, Matheus Cunha, and Chris Wood in attack. In midfield, he picked Ryan Gravenberch, Moises Caicedo, and Cole Palmer. He had a back-four of Ola Aina, Nikola Milenkovic, Virgil van Dijk, and Antonee Robinson, with David Raya in goal.
Neville, on the other hand, had a surprise mention in Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest in goal and Gvardiol at left-back, which did spark reactions from Carragher. His preferred Premier League team of the season had Sels in goal with Alexander-Arnold, William Saliba, Van Dijk, and Gvardiol in defense. Gravenberch, Caicedo and Palmer formed the midfielder while Salah, Cunha and Wood formed the attack.
