Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti's interesting response when asked about Italy's chances to win Euro 2024 have resurfaced. This comes after the Azzurri suffered a disappointing exit in the Round of 16 after losing 2-0 to Switzerland on Saturday, June 29.
The Italian was lauding Germany's squad, claiming he was curious about the hosts. When asked about Luciano Spalletti's side, he said (via Madrid Xtra on Twitter):
“I’m very curious about Germany at home, they have an interesting team.”
Interviewer: “What about Italy?”
Ancelotti: “What about them?”
The defending champions were expected to go far in the 2024 edition but were left stunned by a resolute performance from the Swiss. A goal in either half from Remo Freuler (37') and Ruben Vargas (46') ensured they progressed to the quarter-finals.
Italy were drawn into a difficult Group B alongside Spain, Croatia and Albania. With one win, one draw, and one loss, they finished second behind La Roja and were drawn to face Murat Yakin's side.
However, they were toothless in attack, mustering just one shot on target (11 attempts) and an xG of 0.78.
Gianluigi Donnarumma reveals what Italy were lacking after Round of 16 exit to Switzerland
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma claimed that their poor first half performance and sluggish start to the second period cost them dearly in their 2-0 loss to Switzerland. The Azzurri suffered a disappointing exit in the Round of 16 after a poor performance.
After the game, Donnarumma said (via Sky Sport Italia):
“We lacked a bit of everything today, we lacked courage and quality. The first half performance was so bad, because they always had the initiative and hurt us. In the second half, we were meant to start strong, instead we conceded immediately and that made it even tougher.
“We were disappointing, we let people down, we have to accept that. Switzerland had too much time to think, we were not aggressive enough. We lacked the desire to react, to help each other out. We lacked everything today.”
Fans made their frustration with the side's performance clear when Donnarumma, as the captain, led the team towards the supporters after the game. They were treated with boos and jeers.
Italy rarely looked threatening throughout the affair as they were suffocated by an organised Switzerland side. They managed just one shot on target out of total 11 attempts.
