Manchester City icon Sergio Aguero once stated that former Real Madrid forwards Raul and Karim Benzema have better goal catalogues than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine accused Ronaldo of only scoring from free-kicks, stating that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was lucky as the goalkeepers were at fault for his goals.
Sergio Aguero's comments came after Lionel Messi netted his 702nd goal in European football during PSG's 2-0 win against Nice back in April 2023. While live streaming on Twitch, Aguero compared his former Argentina teammate Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, criticizing the quality of the latter's goals.
Aguero said (via Manchester Evening News h/t Medio Tiempo):
"Look where he scores the goal from. Come on. All free-kick goals and pure luck. Messi's are all at the angle, stupid. But what does [Ronaldo] do? Goalkeeper's fault."
He added:
"I think Raul has better goals, [Karim] Benzema I think he has better ones."
Cristiano Ronaldo remains the highest scorer in Real Madrid's history, having recorded 450 goals and 131 assists in 438 appearances across all competitions. The 39-year-old has been prolific with both feet, in the air, and on set pieces throughout his career, which has led to much success. He even won the Puskas Award in 2009 while representing Manchester United for his long-range effort against Porto.
Benzema and Raul are also Real Madrid legends and are the second and third-highest goalscorers in the club's history, respectively. Benzema has netted 354 goals in 648 games, while Raul has scored 323 in 741 appearances across all competitions.
"For me it's the best club ever" - Cristiano Ronaldo names Real Madrid as the greatest club in football history
Al-Nassr ace Cristiano Ronaldo recently stated that he believes Real Madrid are the greatest club in football history. He also expressed his opinion on Carlo Ancelotti and Co., as well as their success in the UEFA Champions League.
Ronaldo recently sat down with former teammate Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel - UR.Cristiano. He said (via Hindustan Times):
“Real Madrid looking very good, they are a kind of time who don't rush under pressure. People say they are lucky in Champions League, no they aren't lucky. They prepare for these kind of moments. Bernabeu, it has a different aura, the energy is different."
He added:
"When the big teams go there, they score a goal, and in the 85th or 90th minute, they feel the pressure. For me it's the best club ever in the history of football."
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Los Blancos in the summer of 2009 from Manchester United for a then-record transfer fee of £80 million. Over the next nine years, the 39-year-old established himself as one of the greatest of all time, helping Real Madrid win 15 trophies - including four Champions League cups.
