“What do you do with Trent then?” - Ex-Chelsea star warns Liverpool that potential signing could hurt Trent Alexander-Arnold

Former Chelsea left-back Scott Minto has warned Liverpool of the potential perils of signing Bayern Munich superstar Joshua Kimmich. The German has been courted by the Reds this summer, with reports claiming that they have made an enquiry about his situation at Bayern.

Kimmich has entered the last year of his deal at the Allianz Arena, with talks of a renewal nowhere in sight. With 390 club appearances and 20 trophies under his belt, he is undoubtedly a legend at the Bavarian club.

Apart from his experience, Bayern have also benefited from his versatility — he can play as a right-back and in defensive midfield. That, however, is something that Alexander-Arnold already offers to Liverpool, according to Minto.

The 52-year-old English pundit told TalkSPORT (via Rousing The Kop):

"Kimmich is a good player, a central midfielder as well as a right-back, he would definitely add to almost anybody’s team. But then for Liverpool, what do you do with Trent then? You have got a right-back there who could play in midfield, so it’s the same sort of principle."

More than Liverpool, it has been the England national team that has taken advantage of Alexander-Arnold's ability to play in central midfield. That, however, could be attributed to the Three Lions' depth in the right-back position — something that the Reds can't boast.

The first two matches Alexander-Arnold played at the Euro 2024 saw him feature in central midfield. It remains to be seen if Arne Slot, the club's new manager, chooses to go down that route. The club has arguably been in need of a world-class defensive midfielder since Fabinho's exit last year.

They signed Wataru Endo in 2023 after missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, but many within the club's fanbase view the 31-year-old Japan international as a placeholder signing.

Liverpool prepare for Trent Alexander-Arnold talks amid Real Madrid interest - Reports

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are prepared to hold crunch contract talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England international has supposedly been the subject of interest from Real Madrid this summer.

With Daniel Carvajal (32) and Lucas Vazquez (33) gradually nearing the twilight of their careers, Real Madrid could be on the lookout for a new full-back. Alexander-Arnold, 25, is widely regarded as one of the finest full-backs around, and Real Madrid have shown time and again that they want the cream of the crop in their team.

The Englishman is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, which, as per Capology, sees him pocket £180,000 in weekly wages. So far a one-club man, he has 19 goals and 81 assists in 310 senior appearances and has lifted eight trophies.
