Former Argentina goalkeeper Hugo Gatti believes Angel Di Maria left Real Madrid because of his wife Jorgelina Cardoso. Fideo arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2010 from Benfica as an emerging star in world football
The Argentina forward spent four campaigns with Los Blancos, scoring 36 goals and setting up 85 more from 190 games across competitions. He left the LaLiga champions in the summer of 2014 to join Manchester United.
Speaking to La Nacion, Gatti insisted that Di Maria left Real Madrid because he got carried away.
"He was a great player at Real Madrid, but he left because he got carried away one day and they didn't forgive him. And he left because his wife wanted to leave. That's the problem with players: when your career is controlled by your wife, it gets complicated. The same thing happens with this 'Copavino,' who didn't win and everyone talks about it," Gatti said.
Fideo had a forgettable time at Old Trafford, struggling to come to terms with Premier League football. He left the following summer to move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
After seven seasons at the Parc des Princes, where he registered 93 goals and 119 assists from 295 games, the Argentine briefly moved to Juventus in 2022. He left the Bianconeri in the summer of 2023 to join Benfica, where he currently plies his trade.
How many trophies has Angel Di Maria won with Real Madrid?
Angel Di Maria won five trophies in his four seasons with Real Madrid. The Argentine won the league, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Supercopa de Espana during his stay.
Fideo was a key figure for the LaLiga champions during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, Real Madrid let him go after receiving a then-British-record fee of £59.7m from Manchester United in 2014.
The Argentine has also enjoyed tremendous success with his national team and has been decisive in several finals. He scored in the final of the 2021 Copa America to help La Albiceleste win their first major trophy in almost three decades.
He scored in the 3-0 win over Italy in the Finalissima the following year. Di Maria scored in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against France as well, helping Argentina win the coveted Cup. He retired from international duty following the 2024 Copa America win this summer.
