Former Manchester United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi has urged Andre Onana to end his ties with the Red Devils. It comes in the wake of the Cameroonian's struggles at the club since joining from Inter Milan.
United paid a transfer fee in the region of £47 million to secure the 28-year-old's signature from then Serie A champions Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. His arrival also saw him replace long-standing United goalie, David de Gea, in one of the tough calls made by former manager Erik ten Hag.
Despite the high expectations since moving to Old Trafford last season, Onana has struggled to find his feet at the club. The 28-year-old shot-stopper has been guilty of conceding cheeky goals, with most recent coming in his side's 0-2 loss to Wolves after Matheus Cunha scored from a corner kick.
Meanwhile, former club goalkeeper Taibi, who spent one year at Old Trafford between 1999 and 2000, has urged Onana to move away from Manchester United. He further suggested that Onana isn't quite suited for the Premier League and that could be a reason for the player's struggles.
He said via the Sun:
"I'd be straight to the point and tell him, "Andre, you are one of the best keepers in Europe but in the Premier League, you are under-performing. Block out criticism, do some soul-searching, press the reset and go again. And if things don't change by June, move on",''
Taibi added:
"I think subconsciously the United environment isn't ideal for him and when a marriage is showing cracks, it's pointless to continue. Sometimes things don't work out at a team and it's best to go separate ways, which would not be a failure.
"For me he's a strong goalkeeper who finds himself in a situation where he can't show his skills because he is not cut out for the English game. He's only suited to the Prem when it comes to his ball-playing ability and structure."
Like Onana, Tiabi also struggled during his time at Manchester United despite high hopes upon joining the Red Devils. He made just four appearances for United before returning to Italy to join Reggina. A possible return to Italy could also be considered by Onana.
A look at Andre Onana's numbers since joining Manchester United
The 28-year-old goalkeeper has started all of Manchester United's Premier League games this season. He has, however, conceded a total of 21 goals in his 18 starts for United in the league, as they currently have a negative three-goal difference.
Onana has also conceded a further seven goals outside the Premier League, making it a total of 31 goals conceded in 25 games across all competitions this season.
The Cameroonian also conceded a combined total of 74 goals across all competitions for United in his first season, 49 of those came in the Premier League during the 2023-24 league campaign. He has kept seven clean sheets for the Red Devils this season.
Next up for Onana and Manchester United will be a Premier League home game against Newcastle United at Old Trafford tomorrow (December 30).
