"For me, that’s a big no. I’m not having it." When Neal Maupay blasted former Everton teammate for Siu celebration against Manchester United
In the 2021/22 Premier League season, former Everton striker Neal Maupay blasted his former teammate Andros Townsend for recreating Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic SIU celebration against the legendary forward. The English winger bagged a goal as the Toffees drew 1-1 with the Red Devils.
Townsend joined the Merseyside-based club in 2021 on a free transfer from Crystal Palace and went on to bag seven goals and four assists in 1821 minutes across 27 games. However, Maupay, who he had never played with professionally, blasted him, telling SPORTbible:
“I saw that moment last year when I signed for Everton. People were still talking about it when we played Manchester United. So I went on the internet and I looked for it. For me, that’s a big no. I’m not having it."
“You’re playing against arguably one of the greatest players of all time. He’s scored a thousand goals and you get one goal while he’s on the bench. He probably doesn’t even know you. He’s Ronaldo, right? If Ronaldo doesn’t know me then fair enough. To do his celebration? For me, he’s too big for that so that’s a big no."
Neal Maupay plays for French giants Marseille after joining them from the Toffees on a loan deal in the summer. Townsend recently joined Turkish outfit Antalyaspor, and Cristiano Ronaldo plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
