Inter Miami's Lionel Messi wasn't present at the White House to receive his Presidential Medal of Freedom due to a scheduling error as per GOAL. The Argentine ace was among 19 people, including basketball legend Magic Johnson, who were bestowed with America's highest civilian honor this week.
Messi has taken the MLS to the world stage since arriving at the Chase Stadium in the summer of 2023. However, his philanthropic work off the pitch was recognized by the White House.
Unfortunately, Lionel Messi couldn't be present at the White House for the ceremony. A statement from the player's camp stated:
"The White House informed FIFA, which informed the club at the end of December that Leo was to be awarded this recognition. Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he feels deeply honored and that it is a great privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he will not be able to attend. He thanked the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet with him in the near future."
Neither Messi nor any of his representatives were present. As such, his name wasn't even read out at the ceremony, which was attended by the likes of Denzel Washington, Bono, and Hillary Clinton.
When will Lionel Messi be back in action for Inter Miami?
Lionel Messi has changed Inter Miami's fortunes since joining the club as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In his debut season, the Argentine superstar powered the Herons to the Leagues' Cup, the first trophy in the club's history.
He was also indispensable for Inter Miami last season, registering 23 goals and 13 assists from 25 games across competitions. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner helped the Florida-based club win the Supporters' Shield but missed out on the MLS Cup.
With Javier Mascherano taking over the reins at Inter Miami during the off-season, Lionel Messi will be determined to get his hands on the MLS Cup this year. The Herons start their new season with the Concacaf Champions Cup tie against Sporting KC on February 18.
However, Inter Miami will also play two friendlies in the coming weeks, against Club America on January 18, and Orlando City on February 14, as they prepare for the new season.
