Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has provided an update on Marcus Rashford's availability against Liverpool on Sunday, January 5. The Portuguese tactician has claimed that Rashford is unlikely to feature against the Premier League leaders due to illness.
Amorim has revealed that Rashford has not been training this week because of illness and is likely to miss the trip to Anfield. Ahead of Manchester United's away fixture against Liverpool, Amorim said in his press conference, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News:
"It’s the same situation. At the moment, he’s ill, he’s not training so we'll see in the future but he's like a normal player, then I make a selection so it's the same."
Amorim added:
"I think he's going to be out this week, he's not training. We'll see but I think this week he's out."
Things have not gone well for Rashford since Ruben Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford in November. He was not named in four successive matchday squads by the manager and only returned to the bench last week against Newcastle United.
The England international, however, was an unused substitute for Manchester United as they were beaten 2-0 by Eddie Howe's side. It could be a difficult game for the Red Devils when they take on high-flying Liverpool on Sunday given their struggles of late.
United are winless in their last nine trips to Anfield, having lost five of those games and drawing four. They have conceded 18 goals during that run while only scoring once.
Rashford has scored a total of seven goals and provided one assist in 19 games against the Merseyside giants over the years. He has scored seven goals and produced three assists in 24 games for the Red Devils this season.
Joe Cole predicts the outcome of Liverpool vs Manchester United
Former Liverpool winger Joe Cole has claimed that it won't be a straightforward win for the Reds when they take on Manchester United on Sunday, December 5. The Red Devils are struggling at the moment and face a tricky trip to Anfield to take on their bitter rivals this weekend.
Despite the two teams' contrasting form, Joe Cole has claimed it will be a close game. He has, however, backed Arne Slot's side to secure a 2-1 win. The ex-Chelsea attacking midfielder told Paddy Power:
"It’s a derby and it’s a one-off game. But having said that, you can’t look past this Liverpool side. Manchester United will turn up, make a game of it, but Liverpool will win 2-1."
The pundit added:
"Manchester United might threaten on the counter-attack and get a goal, but they’ll get pinned back at Anfield up against the Kop."
Liverpool have been in their groove under Arne Slot in the Dutchman's debut season and find themselves at the top of the Premier League table. They also lead the Champions League table and have also made it to the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are 14th in the league table and have lost their last four games across competitions. They have won just six of their 19 games this season in the Premier League while losing nine.
