The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has claimed that Arsenal will not be active in the ongoing January transfer window. These statements may not please Gunners fans, who are desperately hoping for reinforcements, with the team in a Premier League title race.
At the moment, the north Londoners are second in the league standings, six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Multiple pundits, including Paul Merson, have suggested in recent times that Mikel Arteta's team are lacking a proper number nine.
Despite these suggestions, Ornstein said on The Athletic FC Podcast (via The Boot Room):
“I think by and large that they are going to go with what they’ve got, which again will not be music to the ears of many fans who are baying for signings as Arsenal look to compete for a trophy that many feel Arteta needs to deliver or face some pressure.
"Personally, I think he’s done a fantastic job at Arsenal and got them competitive again, and let’s see how the rest of this season goes."
While Ornstein claims that the Gunners are likely to carry on with most of their squad, injuries in key areas may force Arteta's hand. Bukayo Saka is said to miss a good chunk of the season, and the club lacks cover in that area.
Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber is the only right back available, with Ben White injured. The Dutchman's absence has forced Arteta to deploy Thomas Partey in that role.
Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal could be ready to pounce on transfer targets in January
While David Ornstein has predicted a quiet January for Arsenal, Fabrizio Romano seemingly disagrees slightly. The transfer expert was recently addressing the Gunners' links with Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha.
Although he says that a move for the Brazilian will be difficult, he claims the north London side are willing to pounce if the right price is demanded. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano said:
"In case there will be an opportunity, we had many links these days with Matheus Cunha, he is a player they like. But just in general, in case, a player appreciated by Arsenal appears on the market and could be available at a good fee, I think they could be ready.”
Cunha has been brilliant for his club side this season in 19 Premier League appearances, bagging 10 goals and four assists. He's contracted with Wolves till the summer of 2027.
