Alan Shearer has said that he would have preferred to play with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney over Cristiano Ronaldo. He explained that the Englishman would have passed the ball, unlike Ronaldo.
On The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker was asked who between Rooney and Ronaldo he would have liked playing with. He was quick to name Rooney:
"I'm going Rooney - because I'd much prefer to play with Rooney than Ronaldo.".
Shearer also said that he would have picked Rooney over Ronaldo:
"Me too, because you might not get a pass off Ronaldo!"
Lineker admitted that Ronaldo is a superstar, but his teammate pick would always be Rooney:
"Ronaldo's obviously a superstar. But I'm just saying in terms of who I'd prefer to play with!"
Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney played 206 matches together at Manchester United. They combined for 25 goals, 11 of which were scored by Ronaldo.
Alan Shearer blasted Cristiano Ronaldo for his Manchester United antics
Alan Shearer was furious with Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving the Manchester United bench while the game with Tottenham in 2022 was underway. Shearer said that the forward was selfish and that refusing to come on as a substitute wasn't right:
"From the outset, I should say that Cristiano Ronaldo's recent behaviour is totally unacceptable.
"Showing respect to your teammates, your manager and your club's supporters are amongst the fundamentals in football and to refuse to come on as a substitute, as Erik ten Hag has confirmed, and retreat to the dressing room with a game still in progress takes a flamethrower to one of the primary dressing-room codes."
He added:
"In a team game, where the basic principle is that you're all in it together win or lose, such a display of selfishness and petulance is desperately unprofessional, and it's right that Ronaldo should be disciplined by Manchester United because of it.
"His was a terrible example to set, and it's a shame that instead of reflecting on their best performance of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, Ten Hag has been forced to talk about someone who only figured on the periphery."
Ronaldo was not happy with Erik ten Hag using him as a substitute. He had an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, leading to his contract termination in November 2022.
