Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr teammate Alvaro Gonzalez once had a hilarious exchange with Lionel Messi on the pitch. Gonzalez used to play for La Liga side Espanyol when the Argentine played for Barcelona.
At one point in time, there were three Catalan derbies between Espanyol and Barca in a short space of time. Hence, the rivalry intensified on the pitch. Gonzalez had a heated moment with Messi and he mocked the Argentine superstar.
Looking back at the incident, Gonzalez said in 2019 (via Sport BIBLE):
"It is quite a funny anecdote. It was period where we had three consecutive derbies between Espanyol and Barcelona. Matches of great intensity."
Speaking about his exchange with Lionel Messi, Gonzalez added:
"We used to banter each other back and forth. I said to him: 'You are really small, miniscule.' He looks at me and responds: 'You, you are really bad at football.' I had the final word: 'Yes, we are both right.' We laughed together and this story brought about a lot of smiles in Spain."
Alvaro Gonzalez currently plays for Al-Nassr. He has scored a goal against Al-Khaleej as Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. are level at 1-1 during the ongoing Saudi Pro League clash.
Alvaro Gonzalez and Cristiano Ronaldo could be rivals to Lionel Messi yet again next season
Lionel Messi, currently in the final months of his PSG contract, will reportedly leave the club at the end of the season (according to Fabrizio Romano). The Argentine has been heavily linked with a return to Barcelona.
Messi also reportedly has a mega €320 million per year salary offer from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. If he joins the Riyadh-based team, the 35-year-old will once again become rivals with Al-Nassr duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Gonzalez.
However, there have been reports that PSG are working on extending Messi's stay and are reportedly looking to offer him a fresh renewal offer.
