Nigel Adkins, who was axed by Southampton 2 months ago, is set to take over the Reading’s managerial post. Reading will be confirming the new move at a press conference scheduled for early this morning.
Adkins was sacked by Southampton in January. Despite his successful efforts in leading the Saints to back to back promotions after 7 years of playing football in the third tier, he was replaced by Mauricio Pochettino at the St Mary’s stadium. This move by the club was not received in very good spirits by fans and experts around the world.
Adkins has agreed to replace Brian McDermott at the Reading camp.
Adkins taking over as the boss at the Madejski Stadium is expected to be received well by the Royals’ supporters. Even though he is the second choice of the club, as their efforts in bringing Brighton manager Gus Poyet went in vain last week, the supporters think Adkins is the best man for the job.
Adkins should be ready to face an uphill task of reviving the club’s fortunes, as currently they are just above the bottom of the Premier League. He is set to be watched closely by the management with eight games to go in the season.
His first game as boss will be against Arsenal at Emirates next weekend, following which will be his first home game against his former club Southampton on April 6. However, most believe that the club’s chances of redemption are very slim following their run of six consecutive losses in all competitions.
