Cristiano Ronaldo admits defeat to Lionel Messi in Ballon d'Or race
Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted defeat to Lionel Messi in the race to claim the most Ballon d'Or award. The duo have claimed the award 13 times combined throughout their storied careers, with the Portuguese star bagging five and his Argentine rival claiming eight.
The duo is unlikely to win any more Ballon d'Or awards. With Ronaldo now 39 and Messi 37, they are now in the twilight of their careers and even missed out on the shortlist for the prize for the first time in a generation.
Speaking to the press after his side, Al-Nassr beat Al-Rayyan on September 30, Ronaldo revealed that he is less focussed on personal accolades like the Ballon d'Or. He said via talkSPORT:
“It is not important anymore whether I am the best or not, I no longer care about that. It is good for a player to score goals, but for me it is better for the team to win. I am used to breaking records and I no longer look for them. The most important thing for me now is to enjoy and help Al Nassr and my teammates to win.”
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are considered to be two of the greatest players of all time and are unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon in the sport. Ronaldo will be focused on helping his Riyadh-based club claim the Saudi Pro-League title from Al-Hilal this season after failing to win the league last year despite his efforts.
