Carlos Vela turns down invitation to represent Mexico in World Cup 2014

Carlos Vela of Mexico is substituted after picking up an injury during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Group A match between France and Mexico at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on June 17, 2010 in Polokwane, South Africa.

Carlos Vela has scored nine goals in 35 appearances with the national team.

Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela has withdrawn his name from the list of players who will be going to Brazil for World Cup 2014.

In the official statement released by the Mexican Football Federation, it was stated that Héctor González Iñárritu, Director General of National Teams and Ricardo Pelaez, Sports Director of Selection Mayor had a brief meeting with Vela in Madrid.

Vela, apparently isn’t mentally prepared for the tournament from the mental and emotional point of view and, therefore will not be called up by Mexican coach Miguel Herrera.

Vela released an official statement on Monday which said: “In this process that has been developing for the next World Cup, I have not been 100% mentally ready to represent (Mexico) — or form part of the representation — and give it the maximum it deserves.”

The striker hasn’t played for his country since the last World Cup held in South Africa after a dispute with the former Mexican coach Jose Manuel de la Torre and the national soccer federation.

Vela has scored nine times for Mexico in 35 international appearances.
