Following their signing of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for an amount suggested being around £27m, Manchester United has now completed the transfer of English left-back Luke Shaw from Southampton.
Shaw, 18, has agreed to a four-year deal worth £100,000-a-week.
Talking to the club’s official website, he said, "I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.”
He continued, “I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club."
Assistant manager Ryan Giggs was delighted with the deal, and said, “Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential. He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise."
Shaw travelled to Manchester on Thursday for his medical, and had indicated that he was moving to Old Trafford before the move was confirmed after he changed his Twitter bio to ‘Professional footballer at Manchester United football club.’ However, he removed it minutes later.
Shaw, 18, is now the most expensive teenager in the world, beating the record held by his new teammate Wayne Rooney. The Evertonian striker was also signed by Manchester United for £25.6 million in 2004.
