A very few people have the boon to remain young forever. Their charm, their aura and their fan-folklore remains intact. One of those few is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The baby faced assassin’s romance with the Premier League begins again, this time as manager of Cardiff City.
The former Manchester United forward is still regarded as a cult figure at United. The ’20LEGEND‘ banner still adores the Stretford End at the Theatre of Dreams. The ‘And Solskjaer has won it‘ banner reminds us of his winning goal at Barcelona, enabling United to lift the Champions League after 30 long years.
Ole’s first encounter with the Premier League began when Sir Alex bought him over from Molde FK, for a fee of £1.5 million. He looked like an apprentice, courtesy, his fresh young face. But, when football was concerned, he proved in his very first season to be the biggest bargain secured by United, scoring 18 Premier League goals.
His biggest traits were his work ethics and his modesty. He never complained about coming off the bench and delivered whenever was expected of him. The 99’ FA Cup third round encounter against Liverpool and the hammering of Nottingham Forest are classic examples of him.
The best goal which he scored as a substitute is undoubtedly in the ’99 Champions League final. In the last minute of injury time, United get a corner. Beckham curls it in, Sheringham heads it towards the far post and it lands on the feet of Ole. He pokes the ball into the back of the net and the rest as we know is history. Manchester United became the first ever English team to lift the treble.
This time Ole returns for his second innings, as manager of Cardiff City. The bluebirds are in the relegation zone and it is on the baby faced assassin to guide them clear. His first encounter came against Newcastle in the FA Cup third round. Coming from behind and scripting that epic win surely would have reminded him of his Manchester United days.
Better still, the winning goal being scored by a substitute would have reminded him of himself. Solskjaer holds the record for the most goals scored for Manchester United as a substitute, scoring 28 goals off the bench.
His first encounter in the Premier League may have resulted in a loss, but it was a hard earned victory for West Ham. After the match Solskjaer said, “There’s no panic. I didn’t expect it to be all singing and dancing. This is the Premier League.”
The Norwegian has been trained by none other than the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, who considers Ole as his most loyal student. His analysis, vision and knowledge of the game is spectacular. There goes a buzz around Old Trafford that Ole use to study the game sitting on the bench so as to make the maximum impact when he comes on.
He used to watch the shortcomings of the defense, so as to hit them hard when he had the ball. As far as football is concerned, Ole has made it clear that he will be the one running things on the pitch. It should also be noted that a mind such as Ole will not give into the madhouse created at Cardiff by their owner Vincent Tan.
It is the baby faced assassin’s second encounter with the Premier League. With his abilities and determination, he is sure to make it as memorable as the first one. His appointment comes at the right time for the bluebirds. It is in the fans now to place their trust in him and be hopeful of surviving for another season in England’s top flight.
