In January 2011, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish was appointed as the caretaker manager of the club after the dismissal of Roy Hodgson. Kenny Dalglish had a great start to his second stint as club manager. At the end of the 2010-11 season, he had been given a three-year contract by Liverpool due to the pressure from Liverpool fans. However, Liverpool finished eighth in the league next season, Dalglish was fired.
Manchester United are in almost a similar state right now. Ole Solskjaer has initiated his "caretaker" stint as a manager in a perfect manner, similar to the way Dalglish started his stint at Liverpool.
Liverpool fans pressurized ownership to confirm Dalglish in 2011, most United fans want Solskjaer to be confirmed. Two key differences, however, between the two situations, are the talent gap and resources. That's where Dalglish failed and Solskjaer can succeed.
United under Solskjaer, is now playing like a team of generational talents. A team whose progress was stunted by Jose Mourinho's tactics is now dispatching its oppositions.
Marcus Rashford, who was the subject of persistent criticism from Mourinho, has been a revelation for the Red Devils in the last few games. Paul Pogba, known for his lack of efforts under Mourinho, is again starting to play like Paul Pogba whom we have seen with Juventus and the France National side.
Romelu Lukaku, who thinks life at Manchester United is "totally different" under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, scored with the first touch against Bournemouth as a substitute. Even Alexis Sanchez impressed his manager with an assist during his substitute performance against Newcastle.
United's defense which looked in shambles looked more assured under Ole as they conceded just three goals in four games. These players are now justifying their much talked about talent. And Solskjaer's United as of now is playing like the Manchester United of Alex Ferguson.
Last few years have been soothing for the fans of United's rivals to see them struggling. However, things could change fast if Solskjaer turns out to be the new caretaker equivalent of Zinedine Zidane instead of Kenny Dalglish.
Solskjaer's team is playing positive football, players are happy again and most crucially fans are optimistic about the future again. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was an integral part of Manchester United's success in the past, and the person who closely watched Alex Ferguson masterminding dominance over rivals.
Glazers should consider giving him a long-term contract. This is a risk worth taking. Where "world class" managers failed, perhaps, the former player may succeed.
