Patrice Evra has asked Manchester United to let him leave the club this summer, ending his eight-year Old Trafford career, according to a journalist at the BBC.
Evra, 33, was always believed to be on his way out of Man United this summer, following defensive partners Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who have both gone onto pastures new after their contracts expired during United’s dreadful campaign under David Moyes.
The Frenchman, who represented his country at the World Cup this summer, was expected to sign a new deal despite strong rumours that Evra was to leave and join Juventus in Serie A.
However, Mike Keegan of the BBC has now claimed that the French full-back has asked the 20-time league champions if he can leave this summer. It follows the arrival of Luke Shaw for almost £40 million from Southampton, meaning Evra’s place in the side was under question before pre-season had even started.
The likelihood of Shaw starting at left-back next season is probably the main reason behind Evra’s decision to ask to leave Man Utd as he closes in on the final playing days of his career.
Evra played 273 league games for Man United, scoring seven goals.
