Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has branded Ashley Young’s dive ‘embarassing’ in Manchester United’s 1-0 over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, according to BT Sport. Scholes has slammed the winger’s bad habit of diving and he has requested him to get rid of it from his game.
The 30-year-old went down in theatrical fashion during the dying stages of the game, when he was brought down by Georgi Shchennikov in the penalty box, but the referee deemed it to be a goal kick after pondering his options for a moment or two.
Despite his deliberate attempt to draw a foul and win a penalty for his team, the former Aston Villa winger was not booked for the simulation and this is not the first time that he has been called out for his diving.
There have been many instances in the past where the England international has received a lot of criticism for his dramatic tumbles in the penalty box, including the one against his former club at Old Trafford in 2012. It’s an aspect of his game which has been a big problem over the past few seasons.
This shameful act by Young has angered the former United midfielder Scholes, who has insisted that the player needs to get rid of it from his game.
“Ashley needs to stop doing this,” Scholes said in an interview.
“He knows that himself, but it's just a habit and he can't get rid of it.”
“It's so obvious and he just needs to get this out of his game. It is embarrassing and Ashley knows it.”
“He's a really good player and he doesn't need to resort to those tactics, but I just think it's ingrained in him.”
Rooney reflects on the game against CSKA Moscow
The United captain scored the winner with just 10 minutes left on the clock, and his goal was enough to secure a much-needed victory for the Red Devils who are now the table toppers in Champions League Group B.
As soon as Anthony Martial was substituted off in the second half, Rooney moved into a central position and it was from that position where he scored the winner.
“It is difficult when teams come and defend and it is tough to break them down,” he said.
“We had to keep grinding at them, keep digging away and thankfully the chance came in the end and we got the goal. It is a big win for us.”
“A lot of teams we play against now, they defend deep.”
He further added: “ Anyone who has played the game will tell you that is tough when you don’t get an early goal.”
“We are top of the group now and we have a big game against PSV Eindhoven at home next.”
“If we make sure we win that game, it will almost certainly give us qualification.”
