Paul Scholes: Manchester United were “very lucky” to sign Juan Mata

Old Trafford hero Paul Scholes has declared that his former club were “very lucky” to sign Juan Mata in January, reports the Daily Star.

The 25 year-old Spaniard made his £37.1 million move from Premier League rivals Chelsea a matter of weeks ago but has already displayed glimpses of his talent in three appearances for the Red Devils.

Despite the side’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Fulham that leaves United nine points off of a Champions League place, Scholes believes Mata’s addition will help David Moyes and his team climb the table.

“For the last couple of years Mata has probably been the best player in the league. We had to pay a lot of money for him and we were very lucky that he wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans, and only we can benefit from him now. Hopefully he can have a strong end to the season and he can help us climb the table,” the former England international declared.

However, former United enforcer Scholes is adamant the mercurial midfielder has different strengths to himself but still has the ability to improve David Moyes’ side, although his arrival will give the Scot a selection dilemma.

“I don’t think he’s similar to me. He’s obviously a quality player but he’s not a central-midfielder, he’s a player who likes to play in the number 10 role.

“It’s going to be difficult for the manager now as we’ve got five players vying for two positions. That can only be a healthy thing for competition though as the two forwards always need to impress because they know the talent waiting to take their place,” Scholes insisted.

Mata’s talent is unquestionable but whether Moyes can fit him into United’s starting line-up alongside strikers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie is another matter entirely with the Scot often accused of not being able to get the most from his attacking talent in a lacklustre debut season at the Old Trafford helm.

Juan Mata has created 12 chances in his three league appearances for Manchester United. Tom Cleverly has managed four all season.
