Paul Scholes has expressed his doubts over the sensibility of Manchester United paying £34 million for Luke Shaw this summer, according to his blog at Paddy Power.
Scholes has suggested that paying that sort of fee for a left-back is insane, and that he’d expect to sign a top quality striker for that sort of money.
“For a left-back to be worth £34m shows how silly the game has gone. For that money I want a centre-forward who’s going to score 30 goals a season,” said the Manchester United legend.
He suggested that this was a side effect of Premier League clubs farming out young English talent on loan to clubs further down the English footballing pyramid in favour of average foreign talent. This causes a situation whereby top quality English players, who remain in demand, become overpriced due to a lack of them in the market, especially English players with Premier League experience.
Luke Shaw has just returned from the World Cup with England, who were eliminated in the group stages. The 18-year-old played in England’s dead rubber match against Costa Rica, making only his third appearance for the England national side.
However, recent reports suggest the club may have to be pay even more to bring Shaw to Man United, as the club are now holding out for £40 million.
